My North End Boston

My North End Boston

Boston's North End is the Boston's oldest residential community, where people have lived continuously since it was settled in the 1630s. The neighborhood has a mixture of architecture from all periods of American history, including early structures such as the Old North Church (1723) and the Paul Revere House (1680). The Freedom Trail passes through the North End, making official stops at Paul Revere's house and Old North church. In the early 20th century, it became the center of the Italian community of Boston. Today, it is still largely residential and well-known for its small, authentic Italian restaurants. The North End is famous for its selection of bakeries, eateries and Old-world feeling. In this mid-sized neighborhood, there are approximately 100 eating establishments. Click here to see more video segments from the neighborhood.

One would be hard-pressed to find a city packed with more history than Boston. One of America’s oldest cities, Boston has witnessed America’s social and political change and growth firsthand through events like the Boston Tea Party and The Boston Massacre. America’s first public school, first college (Harvard College) and first subway system all began here.

Today, Massachusetts’ capital remains a social hub of excitement. Situated on the Charles River, the city boasts some of the best seafood restaurants in New England, more Irish pubs than you could ever manage to visit and booming marketplaces that offer a broad array of shopping and food. Faneuil Hall Marketplace features more than 100 of the finest shops and carts; 40 eateries; 17 restaurants and pubs; and Quincy Market Colonnade, one of the most visited food halls in the world. It’s practically impossible to walk three blocks anywhere in the city, especially this area, without stumbling across entertaining street performers, including magicians, musicians, dancers, jugglers and mimes.

With Boston’s plethora of pubs and bars, it’s a daunting task to decide where to grab a pint. Cheers, the inspiration for the TV series, is a good start. The bar was originally founded in 1969 as the Bull & Finch pub and was discovered by Mary Ann and Glenn Charles on their search for an inspirational Boston bar on which to model their TV series’ bar. The rest was history as the show gained popularity through 11 seasons on primetime television. The bar’s dishes are named after the series’ cast, and visitors can order Sam’s Turkey Club, Rebecca’s Fish & Chips, the Giant NORM burger or their award-winning Bahston Clam Chowda.

No city does clam chowder like Boston, but the area serves up a broad variety of other mouthwatering seafood, as well, including lobster and oysters. 33 Restaurant and Lounge in the trendy Back bay area combines a modern décor with an interesting menu of traditional New England foods with an exotic twist. The place is also known for its unique drink concoctions; Boston Globe said, “… at $14, the drinks on the menu at 33, the overwhelmingly stylized South End restaurant and lounge, may be under priced.” Anthony’s Pier 4 provides Boston visitors with the upscale atmosphere and delectable seafood dishes they crave; try their lobster bisque, oyster stew and Maine lobster. And who can forget about dessert? Little Italy’s Modern Pastry, featured in Boston magazine’s “Best of Boston 2008” and on the Food Network, keeps customers coming back with the best authentic, old world, Italian confections around. Locals rave of its cannolis, cookies, biscotti and torrone, a honey almond nougat that remains a consistent favorite.

Boston makes it easy for visitors to make the mistake of spending all their time and eating and barhopping, but the area is also bursting with fun opportunities to pass the time. The New England Aquarium allows people to get up-close-and-person with its animals through harbor seal training sessions, penguin-feeding presentations and a behind-glass view of divers hand-feeding more than 130 different species, including sharks, rays and turtles. Visitors can interact with the city’s history by touring the USS Constitution, the oldest commissioned vessel afloat in the world. Named after the Constitution of the United States by President George Washington, this frigate was built in Boston and fought in numerous wars, including the Quasi War, First Barbary War and the War of 1812.

Since Boston is such a tourist hotspot, there are plenty of options when it comes to hotels, but Jury’s Hotel is quite possibly the best rated and most appreciated by its many guests. Located in the former Boston Police Headquarters in the heart of Back Bay, the upscale and stylish 1920s architectural landmark offers 225 elegant rooms and an exceptionally helpful staff that online reviews can’t seem to stop raving about. Cuffs Irish Bar, located inside the hotel, is just as highly rated as the hotel itself. With a crackling fireplace and colorful lighting, the bar provides a laid back but stylish atmosphere for its guests to order first-rate food and drinks.

Unless you don’t like food, lovely waterfront shopping and a lively nightlife, Boston’s New England charm is hard to resist.
